Meet Chad Goddard, Father Coffee

Thursday, 12 August, 2021

Name of Roastery: Father Coffee

Name of Head Roaster: Chad Goddard

How did you get into coffee roasting?

For Chad, it all began with a burst water pipe in a Tesco near Nottingham in 2007. For Father, we started roasting because we just couldn't find coffee we enjoyed consistently in Jhb so we figured we'd do that ourselves.

What is your favourite coffee to roast currently?

Roasting the macerated natural maragogype from Norma Iris Fiallos is a highlight of every year because it never responds as expected. So, once the initial panic has been overcome it's always one of my favourites for the lessons it inevitably forces us to learn/relearn.

If you had to drink one coffee for the rest of your life, what would it be? (Origin, varietal, processing, roast profile)

I'd love to sound down to earth here, but the truth is that if I had an endless supply of our hyperprocessed geisha by Diego Samuel Bermudez I'd use that for absolutely every cup I ever drink again. Ps. We do have fresh lots from El Paraiso on the way.

What has been your favourite moment in coffee?

Tough to narrow down the good times, but our Slurpy Set Instagram Live cupping from the depths of Lockdown Season One in 2020 was a real highlight. Amidst all the misery and uncertainty and isolation it felt like something fun and affirming and connected.

Tell us one of your favourite songs!

Straight to Hell by The Clash

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?

Salt and vinegar crisps. The comfort of the salt, the danger of the vinegar, it's everything a food needs to be.

Where can we find your roastery?

We've just relocated our roastery to our new mothership location at 19 Dartfield Rd, Kramerville, Jhb.

Can we buy your coffee online?

Yes, our full range is available at www.father.coffee
