Celebrating International Coffee Day!

Friday, 6 October, 2023

Every year on October 1st, coffee lovers around the world come together to celebrate a beverage that has become an integral part of our daily lives – coffee. This cherished drink has earned its own special day, aptly named International Coffee Day, and enthusiasts have plenty of reasons to raise their mugs in celebration.

We know that the history of coffee dates back centuries, with its origins in the highlands of Ethiopia. From its humble beginnings as a source of energy for monks to its global popularity today, coffee has woven itself into the fabric of our daily routines. As coffee enthusiasts, we understand the depth of this connection.

But why do we celebrate it with such passion ?

I mean first and foremost, it’s cultural significance. Coffee is more than just a drink; it's a cultural phenomenon. From the crowded cafes of Paris to street-side coffee roasting and jebena brewing in Ethiopia, coffee brings people together. It provides a space for conversation, contemplation, and companionship. On International Coffee Day, we acknowledge this universal cultural bond that connects us all.

Let’s not forget coffee's economic impact. Our favourite drink is a major global commodity. Millions of people depend on its production, trade, and consumption for their livelihoods. Another reason for coffee enthusiasts to celebrate International Coffee Day is to raise awareness of the challenges faced by coffee farmers, advocating for fair trade practices, and supporting sustainable coffee production.

One of my favourite aspects of coffee is its craftsmanship and innovation. Coffee has evolved beyond a simple morning pick-me-up. The world of coffee has seen an explosion of innovation in recent years. Specialty coffee, cold brews, artisanal roasting methods and even AI run coffee equipment, have all become a significant part of coffee culture. International Coffee Day allows us to celebrate the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into creating the perfect cup.

On International Coffee Day I was reminded of the global network coffee has created, especially on social media. We are living in a virtual coffeehouse, where coffee lovers from every corner of the world shared their passion through hashtag like:  #WorldCoffeeDay or #CoffeeLovers. An abundance of other coffee-related hashtags even began trending days before October 1st. In honour of International Coffee Day, let's raise our cups high and toast to the bean that fuels our passions and brings us all together.
