Cafe of the Week: Naked Coffee

Monday, 4 April, 2016
In the height of the fashion capital district in Johannesburg, Melrose Arch there lies an unassuming coffee hutch with a rather incongruent name for this neighbourhood: Naked Coffee.

It is, stripped bare of its trendy surroundings, simply about a very good cup of coffee. They take this very seriously, a beautiful Nuova Simonelli and naked portafilters accentuate their style and a team of highly capable and day-making baristas make for an unforgettable experience.

We were recently there for an evening with barista champ, Wayne Oberholzer and had the pleasure of meeting Cain and Mpho. They were legends and served up a sensational coffee. I have heard nothing but good things about this little spot since then and I look forward to visiting again soon. We asked the team at Naked how it all came together...

How did you decide to open a coffee outlet in your high-end clothing store? Is there a coffee addict with high standards in your team?
Infinite clothing group owners’ Victor and Shaun are extremely passionate about coffee and the artisan coffee culture. On one of their buying trips to Amsterdam they were inspired to bring these two passions together and 6 months later Naked Coffee was born.

What is your philosophy about coffee?
Make certain that each and every cup served is made with the same amount of love and attention to detail.

Who roasts your beans?

Both our single origin (El Salvador) and blended (Brazil/ Uganada) beans are roasted in small batches (as per our selected taste profile) by a micro-roaster in Cape Town and supplied through Morrico Exports.

What are your trusty baristas names and how did you find them?
Mpho; Cain; Ernest and Eddy - finding the right person for the job is something we strive for in all our businesses. We use various channels to find suitable candidates before making selections. Thereafter its all about the training.

What are your opening hours?

Monday - Saturday: 7:30 am - 6pm / Sunday 8am - 4pm
